UNSW Luminocity 2022

Luminocity 2022: A Dreamlike Journey Beyond Traditional Exhibitions.

The annual UNSW Built Environment undergraduate exhibition, Luminocity, showcases the best student works from across the school.

Luminocity 2022 marked UNSW's first-ever hybrid exhibition, seamlessly blending a fully online virtual exhibition with an in-person experience. Officially launched on UNSW Open Day, visitors were welcomed into a fully blacked-out room illuminated entirely by animated projections. Open Day helpers distributed VR headsets to all attendees, allowing them to explore the full breadth of student works in an inflatable virtual environment. QR codes embedded within wayfinding signage and on plinths enabled visitors who wanted more time to explore or share with friends to access the virtual experience on their mobile devices.

Abstract8 also prototyped and designed 10 projection stands that allowed for 3D animations and student work to be projected onto a series of vinyl-clad acrylic tanks. Each video projection engaged audiences with a variety of content, including animation and 3D physics simulations.

Luminocity demonstrates the wide range of design and critical thinking skills on display within the School of Built Environment. These skills include hand-drawing, physical model-making, prototyping, data-rich 3D modelling, coding, digital fabrication, and immersive forms of mixed and virtual realities.

Many Luminocity projects respond to real-world challenges, with students exploring new possibilities in the design, delivery, and production of the built environment.
